The history of the Sta. Teresita Parish is closely connected to the history of the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes on Retiro Street. The original titular name of the parish-shrine was Sta. Teresita del Niño Jesus Parish. When the parish church was about to be built, World War II broke out. This led the Capuchin fathers to build a temporary chapel for Sunday masses at the offices of the Araneta family on Mayon Street. (The Aranetas has donated the lot for the church in Retiro). After the war and the completion of the beautiful church in Retiro, which enshrines the image of Our Lady of Lourdes, the small church of Sta. Teresita on Mayon Street remained a chapel of the bigger Sta. Teresita Parish.
Seeing the need for having a second a parish, the Capuchin fathers decided, with the recommendation of Cardinal Sin, to elevate the chapel of Sta. Teresita to a parish church. Finally, on August 23, 1977, the parish of Sta. Teresita del Niño Jesus was established, with Fr. Juan Gaston as the first parish priest. By this act also, the name of the parish on Retiro Street was changed from the Sta. Teresita Parish to the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes.
