RE : Red Wednesday 2021

Your Reverences, Brothers and Sisters,

Red Wednesday is a church event to support Christians persecuted for their faith around the world, celebrated every Wednesday of the Last Week or 34th Week in the Ordinary Time or Wednesday after the Solemnity of Christ, King of the Universe.

This year’s Red Wednesday will be held on November 24. The Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) who initiated this campaign provided the theme: “Red without fear: A Church journeying as one.”

ACN is a pontifical charity organization dedicated to the service of Christians around the world through information, prayer, and action, wherever they are persecuted or oppressed or suffering material need. This campaign creates awareness among us about the severity of Christian persecution.

First organized in the United Kingdom in 2016, the Philippines started joining the campaign the following year. In January 2020, the Philippine bishops’ conference officially institutionalized the annual celebration of Red Wednesday in all dioceses. The celebration this year will weave together two of the recent events in the local and universal church: the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines and the preparation towards the Synod of Bishops in 2023.

Let us show our solidarity with all the Christians all over the world who are persecuted because of their faith by supporting the campaign.

      1. As individuals let us make a visible statement by wearing red.
      2. If resources allow let us illuminate the facades of our cathedral and parish churches or respective buildings and homes or local monuments in red lights after the evening celebration of the Holy Eucharist to honor the blood of the persecuted Christians.
      3. Kindly include these 2 intentions in the Universal Prayer or General Intercession on all the Masses on that day.

“That our celebration of Red Wednesday will inspire us to live our faith with courage and joy and will instill braveness to Christians who face persecution for Christ today. We pray.”

“May the sacrifice of our martyred brethren and love of Jesus Christ live on in our country beyond 500 years of outstanding faith. We pray.”

That in all things God may be glorified.

Yours in Christ,
