September 1 marks the start of this year's celebration of Season of Creation. His Eminence Luis Antonio G. Cardinal Tagle, DD. Archbishop of Manila, led thousands of faithful in celebrating the Holy Eucharist. During his homily he emphasized the importance of humility in preserving God's creation. "A time to really thank God for the gift of life," Cardinal said.
He also stated that pride is one of the root causes of the destruction of human lives and of our common home.
The cardinal also emphasized the importance of humility saying, "humility is truth, you know yourself, you know your capacities, you know your limitations and accepting your capacities and limitations leads to a humble and truthful assessments of ourselves." he also said that, “kung mas dakila ka mas mababa ka. A mark of true greatness is humility.”
BEING A GOOD STEWARD
“The attitude of a steward is the one who is forever humble, not presumed owners. We are not the owners of the earth, we are only the steward. The creator is the rightful owner.” He said explaining that we are only stewards of this world and that God alone owns everything. The Cardinal also emphasized that arrogance, discontentment and greediness are causes of destruction of God's creations, and that season of creation is a season of truth.
THE GREATNESS OF MEALS
The cardinal also likened the season of creation into the importance of meal. He said, “Ang meal ay salu-salo. The basic common of meal is a common table. At kapag sabay-sabay kayo, natututo ka to care, to be sensitive at dahil dito walang nasasayang, walang naaaksaya.” He pointed out that without the experience of meal we would not understand the kingdom of God as sharing.
WEB OF LIFE
Bishop Ambo David of the Diocese of Kalookan also shared his message to the participants, indicating that, “ang lahat ng bagay na nilikha ng Diyos ay magkakaugnay-ugnay. Kapag sinaktan mo ang isang bahagi, sinaktan mo ang buong sangnilikha.”
“When we destroy the world, we destroy ourselves.” He added.
He also encouraged the faithful to reduce the use of plastics, and stop acting like one. “Ugaliin natin yung walang plastikan, bawasan natin ang kaplastikan both literally at figuratively.” The Bishop explained that recycling is not enough, because what we need to do is to reduce and totally stop using plastics.
He also made an example in his diocese the largest sanitary landfill of Metro Manila located in Navotas, "patay na ang lahat ng mga palaisdaan doon". He called it, "One huge act of irresponsibility, lahat tayo involve dyan, ni hindi tayo pwedeng magturuan kung sino lang iresponsable, tayo ay bahagi ng problema kaya sana maging bahagi din tayo ng solusyon."
“Care for creation should begin right at home emphasizing.”
Finally, the bishop urged everyone to be responsible stewards, to take care of the world, our home.
CREATION LIKE A MOTHER
Bishop Honesto Ongtioco of the Diocese of Cubao, equated nature to a mother, who gives life, hope and strength. He warned the people that neglecting the nature would lead us to death and destruction. That is why it is really important and a must to protect and care for our mother earth, our one and only home.
The opening of Season of Creation through the activity Walk for Creation was attended by thousands of church workers, and environment defenders at the Liwasang Aurora, Quezon Memorial Circle.
This month long celebration will last until October 4th, commemorating the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of the environment.
