WE ARE IN THE SAME BOAT!
An Easter Message
by Most Rev. Elias L. Ayuban, Jr., CMF, DD
Bishop of Cubao
“We are in the same boat…. We find ourselves afraid and lost. We were caught off-guard by an unexpected, turbulent storm.”
These powerful words from Pope Francis’ meditation during the Urbi et Orbi Extraordinary Blessing at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (March 28, 2020) resonate even more deeply with us Filipinos today as we prepare for the upcoming national elections.
Indeed, the past few years have tested us in countless ways. In today’s Gospel according to John 20:1–9, we can easily see ourselves in Mary Magdalene—overwhelmed by fear, weighed down by sorrow, and searching for hope amid darkness. As a nation, we now face daunting storms: a national debt exceeding ₱18 trillion, deep political and social divisions, widespread corruption, the proliferation of disinformation, and the erosion of moral values. How we respond to these challenges will be shaped significantly by how we vote this coming May 12.
In truth, whatever happens to the boat affects everyone on board—regardless of whether we find ourselves in first-class, tourist, or economy class. If the boat sinks, we all go down with it. That is why, when the future of our country is at stake, we must allow facts to prevail over opinions and let personal preferences be guided by a collective discernment for the common good.
While we all row together, we also need capable and trustworthy pilots—leaders with both competence and integrity—who can steer us toward safety and progress. We cannot afford to entrust our journey to those unprepared for the responsibility. Our political choices reflect not just our values and dreams, but also carry profound moral and social consequences.
And yet, even amid uncertainty, let us not lose hope. Resurrectio Domini, spes nostra—the Resurrection of the Lord is our hope. The Risen Christ remains the true Captain of this boat. With Him at the helm, no storm is too great to overcome.
A grace-filled Easter to all!
