Novena to Our Lady of Mount Carmel

(Themed for the Scapular)

compiled and prepared by Randy F. Bayaua

Opening Song

Prayer
Father,
may the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary,
Mother and Queen of Carmel,
protect us, and bring us
to our holy Mountain, Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God for ever and ever.
Amen.

Catechesis on the Prayer: The relationship between the devotion to Mary and Mount Carmel is expressed beautifully in the Collect Prayer used by the Carmelites in the liturgical celebration for their patronal feast on July 16: “Lord God, you willed that the Order of Carmel should be named in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of your Son. Through her prayers as we honor her today bring us to your holy mountain, Christ our Lord (emphasis added).”
The prayer identifies the holy mountain Carmel with Christ. The “ascent of Mount Carmel” evokes the Marian way of life of the Carmelites as a spiritual ascent of perfection. On this journey with Mary, Carmelite Brothers and Sisters endeavor to be transformed by way of contemplation and intense communion with God, Our Lady, and one another. The Order is proud of their “totally Marian” spirituality which is made visible and best known through the scapular.

First Day, July 7
Scripture (Luke 1 : 30-38)
Then the angel said to her,
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son,
and you shall name him Jesus.
He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High,*
and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father,
and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever,
and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
But Mary said to the angel,
“How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel said to her in reply,
“The Holy Spirit will come upon you,
and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God.
And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age,
and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren;
for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said,
“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
May it be done to me according to your word.”
Then the angel departed from her.

Silence for Meditation

Prayer
O Flower of Carmel,
blossoming vine,
splendor of heaven, most special virgin
and humble mother who gave birth to the Son of God,
still ever remaining a virgin,
look with favour on us in our need.
O Star of the Sea.
Amen.

or

O most glorious and Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel!
I, am unworthy wearer of your holy Scapular,
confident however
that the Church does not call you in vain the "Refuge of Sinners,"
do implore you to make me aware of the favors you have bestowed upon me,
by promoting the welfare of your holy Order,
that being truly contrite for past offenses,
I may by your aid and assistance,
break the chains of my slavery,
and live from this day forward in the happy liberty of the children of God.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ,
who with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
live and reign, one God, world without end.
Amen.

Second Day, July 8
Scripture (Matthew 2 : 13-14)
When they had departed,
behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,
“Rise, take the child and his mother,
flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.
Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him.”
Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt.

Silence for Meditation

Prayer
Most Holy Mary, Our Mother,
in your great love for us
you gave us the holy Scapular of Mount Carmel
in response to the prayers of your Carmelite Children.
Help us now to wear it faithfully and with devotion.
May it be a sign to us of our love for your Son, Jesus.
Amen.
or
We give thanks to you, O Virgin Mother of Carmel,
for the gift of your holy scapular, the sign of your confraternity.
O our Mother, make us worthy to wear that sacred habit
and may my heart be ever pure, free from every stain of sin.
Most Holy Mary, our Mother,
since in the greatness of your love for us
you deign to give us the holy scapular of Mount Carmel
through the instrumentality of your chosen son, Saint Simon Stock.
We beseech you to grant us your special aid,
so that we may wear it with such fruit of holiness
as you expect of us which is our due to render to you.
Amen.

Third Day, July 9
Scripture (John 2 : 1-5)
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee,
and the mother of Jesus was there.
Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding.
When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him,
“They have no wine.”
[And] Jesus said to her,
“Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.”
His mother said to the servers,
“Do whatever he tells you.”

R./ Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Silence for Meditation

Prayer
O Mary, chosen daughter of the Father,
you gave us the Scapular as an outward sign
by which we might be known as your faithful children.
May we always wear it with honour
by avoiding sin and imitating your virtues.
Help us to be faithful to this desire of ours.
Amen.
or
Virgin Mother of Carmel,
remember us who are consecrated to you by the holy scapular.
We place our trust in you, Flower of Carmel,
fruitful Vine, ever- Immaculate Queen,
O Mother mild, implore your Son to hear my prayer now
and at the hour of our death.

You did give us, O Queen of heaven,
the scapular as an outward sign
whereby we might be known as your special and faithful children,
we beseech you to obtain for us,
that we may never soil it by sin,
but, rather may always honor it by imitating your virtues.
Amen.

Fourth Day, July 10
Scripture (Luke 8 : 19-21)
Then his mother and his brothers came to him
but were unable to join him because of the crowd.
He was told,
“Your mother and your brothers are standing outside
and they wish to see you.”
He said to them in reply,
“My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God
and act on it.”*

The Gospel of the Lord.
R./ Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Silence for Meditation

Prayer
O Mary, joy of the new Israel,
when you gave us the scapular as our habit,
you called us to be not only servants,
but also your own children.
We ask you to gain for us from your Son
the grace to live as your children in joy, peace and love.
Amen.

Or

I thank you, my Lady and Mother, for the gift of your holy scapular.
You know well our weakness and our malice,
but we trust in you and under your protection we take refuge.
O Holy Mother of Mount Carmel, despise not our petitions in our necessities,
but deliver us from all danger.

When you give us the habit, O soveriegn Lady, as your livery,
you were not content that we should be merely your servants;
you desired that we become your children.
We beseech you to obtain for the the grace from your Son,
so that we may never cause your Son and you sorrow by sin,
but may always give joy and honor.
Amen.

Fifth Day, July 11
Scripture (Luke 2 : 41-48)
Each year his parents went to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover,
and when he was twelve years old,
they went up according to festival custom.
After they had completed its days,
as they were returning,
the boy Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem,
but his parents did not know it.
Thinking that he was in the caravan,
they journeyed for a day
and looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances,
but not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem to look for him.
After three days they found him in the temple,
sitting in the midst of the teachers,
listening to them and asking them questions,
and all who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.
When his parents saw him, they were astonished,
and his mother said to him,
“Son, why have you done this to us?
Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety.”

The Gospel of the Lord.
R./ Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Most pure and ever Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel!
Powerful advocate of all those who wear your holy Scapular!

I, an unworthy sinner, do this day,

choose you for my Mother, that through your intercession,
I may receive from Him whatsoever grace may be necessary
and profitable for me now, and at the hour of my death.
Amen.

Sixth Day, July 12
Scripture (Luke 1 : 45-49)

that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
my spirit rejoices in God my savior.
For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;
behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.”

The Gospel of the Lord.
R./ Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
