Communicating Hope

Cebu City—A Holy Hour was held on the evening of August 14, led by chairman of the Episcopal Commission on Social Communications (ECSC), Most Rev. Mylo Hubert Vergara,  as part of the formal opening of  the third National Media Convention, at the chapel of the Holy Family Retreat house in Lahug.

Bishop Mylo encouraged the 128 participants attending the convention to maximize the event not only to be updated, but also to be renewed, and to be in fraternal communion with fellow Church Media leaders and workers.

Reflecting on the theme of the convention, “Fear Not for I am With You:  Communicating Hope and Trust in Our Times," Bishop Mylo highlighted the Holy Father's call to inspire a responsible approach when telling stories that should be rooted on the Good News, who is Jesus Christ.

Bishop Mylo gave three catch words for reflection: Prayer, Recognition, and Hope.

Prayer: He reminded the participants of the importance of prayer, for as communicators, we cannot give what we do not have. He emphasized that to become truly effective and credible in what we do, prayer ought to be a big part of our lives, so as to remain attuned to God, and to be able to share the joy of the Gospels with others.

Recognition: With all the negative and distressing news that has become part of our daily existence, it is vital that we are all able to recognize that Jesus is ever present with us as He has promised. "Fear not for I am with you," the Lord said.

As Christians we have been constantly reminded that we all have crosses to bear, and that even in the midst of all the violence, the oppression, the poverty, and the sufferings, Jesus is with us, and He suffers with us. As Christian communicators, we are reminded to recognize and to see Jesus in the poor, in the marginalized, and in all the victims of unjust sytems in society.

Hope: Bishop Mylo narrated his battle with cancer, and how his own sufferings taught him to be more compassionate and merciful to all the people around him. He said that God alone is our source of hope, and in whom we will find complete peace and joy.

The sessions on Poetry, Song Writing, Theater, Radio Drama, and Pocket Filmmaking shall run from August 15 to 17, 2017. ECSC organizers have partnered with the Cebu Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications to make the 3rd National Media Convention possible. (Cubao Media)
